GWR Armstrong class 4-4-0 no. 8 Gooch as running between 1903 to 1905. This model was what I call a “basket case”. One of the superb Modern Outline Kits. There could be many of these kits around, where the original buyer/builder has bitten off more than he can chew, realising the complexity of this kit is beyond his skills. Probably placed in a wardrobe waiting for him to build his confidence to give it another go. It has now been completed by myself to a smooth running condition, and painted by Warren Haywood. Slightly different to other MOK Armstrong class models on these pages. Notice fenders on the tender sides, not coal rails. Lamp irons, not lamp sockets. Different clack valves. All features as seen on archive photos of the prototype. Driven by a Portescap RG7 motor/gear unit. Unfortunately the crankshaft and connecting rods were missing/lost before I acquired the model, so, although it does have slide bars and crossheads, there is nothing there to drive them. The descriptive notes above explain why I can afford to offer this lovely model for sale at roughly half the price that I have sold similar models to this of top quality. It is not a perfectly built model. Don’t expect it to negotiate tight curves or to pull heavy loads, but it has been built square and true and is very good value for money for one of these magnificent MOK Armstrong class models.
GWR Gooch “Rover” class 4-2-2 tender loco “Emperor” A truly magnificent model, built by the late Raymond Walley from the superb Finney7 kit, with fully working inside motion, Slaters wheels and powered by an ABC motor and gear unit. Current collection is via plunger pickups. Raymond’s nameplate is affixed to the underside of the ashpan and tender as provenance. The bogie wheel axles are compensated with each other. The driving and trailing wheel axles are free to move vertically unsprung in their hornguides. All in all the design and build quality of this model is second to none. Warren Haywood is the genius responsible for the astonishing quality of the paintwork and lining, much of it by bow-pen. Name, tender and builders plates are by Severnmill. The phrases and words used here describing the quality of this model are not over-stated, believe me. The completed, but un-painted model was purchased from a table selling many of Raymond’s items at the Gauge O Guild show at Guildford on the 2nd December 2023. I just happened to be in the right place at the right time.
GWR Armstrong class 4-4-0 no. 8 Gooch as running between 1894 and 1903: Built by myself on commission with fully working inside motion from the Modern Outline kit. Expertly painted by Warren Haywood. This is the first of two MOK Armstrong models that I have built. The other, Brunel, is in my collection and can be viewed by following this link.
GWR Armstrong class 4-4-0 no. 16 Brunel: I built this model from the very comprehensive Modern Outline kit, which includes lost wax brass castings for the fully working inside motion and crankshaft. It has been expertly painted by Warren Haywood. This fabulous kit is not for the faint hearted and certainly not for anyone just starting out in O gauge model loco kit building. It is the second of the MOK Armstrong kits that I have built. The other, Gooch, was a commission and can be viewed by following this link.
